Newcastle United play down Chimbonda link

Kevin Keegan has denied reports linking Newcastle United Football Club will Pascal Chimbonda.

The Tottenham Hotspur fullback reportedly told his team-mates he was on the way to St James Park during the January transfer window, yet Keegan has refuted these claims.

When asked about the speculation, he told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle: "It won't be happening."

The United manager is yet to make a move in the transfer market since returning to the Magpies, with his one attempt to sign Jonathan Woodgate from Middlesbrough failing to bear fruit.

Manager Grant praises Chelsea style
22:25 January, 26, 2008
Avram Grant is delighted with the way his Chelsea Football Club are coping without a number of key players.

Despite injuries to John Terry and Frank Lampard and a number of players unavailable due to the African Cup of Nations, the Blues have clinched a place in the Carling Cup final and continue to press in the Premier League.

And thanks to Nicolas Anelka’s first goal for the club and a striker from Shaun Wright-Phillips, the Londoners saw off the challenge of Wigan Athletic on Saturday to progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup.

"Anelka is a proven striker, and I think my judgment on him has proven to be correct,” said Grant. "But the most important thing is we keep the style of the team, even if we've a number of players unavailable.

"The likes of Shaun and Steve Sidwell are doing a decent job, and that tells me what I thought, that the players have developed well in the last three months. We have developed our football, our spirit, and we keep playing our game.”

Arsene Wenger believes his Arsenal Football Club side had to be at their best on Saturday afternoon.

An Emmanuel Adebayor brace and a Nicky Butt own goal have the Gunners a 3-0 win over Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United to progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup, and Wenger hailed his players after a tough match.

"Newcastle started very brightly and created some chances. It took us some time to take control of the game," he told Sky Sports. "We did that slowly in the first half and completely in the second - that is why we scored the goals.

"It was not easy at all. Kevin brought them here with drive going forward and belief in what they do. They were dangerous. We have learnt you need to be top class to beat Newcastle at the moment."

Mellberg close to Aston Villa exit

20:10 January, 22, 2008
Olof Mellberg is close to leaving Aston Villa Football Club for Juventus.

The Swedish international defender is out of contract in the summer, and the Old Lady of Italian football claim to be closing in on his Bosman free transfer signature.

"Mellberg is close to signing a preliminary agreement with Juventus," said the club's sporting director Alessio Secco. "If everything goes well, the player will become a Juve player in July."

Martin O'Neill had hoped to secure Mellberg to a new contract at Villa Park, yet it now looks increasingly likely that the former Racing Santander man is nearing an end to his time in England.

The out of favour Bayern Munich striker has shot to the top of Sven Goran Eriksson’s wanted list for the January transfer window, and the Swede has been given encouragement to make a loan bid for the player.

"I want him to make Euro 2006,” said Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness. "And if we loan him out and everything goes well, we have done everything right. Then he has got games and he comes back on July 1."

Although Podolski has only managed to start two games for Bayern this season, they are reluctant to let him leave on a permanent basis as new boss Jurgen Klinsmann, who arrives in the summer, is a huge fan.
